Programme overview

A foundation for
using German.

The German programme takes a clear route from A1 foundations through A2 to B1. Each stage combines useful conversation with the reading, listening and writing needed to manage everyday situations.

Online and onsite lessons are designed around guided practice: asking questions, listening for meaning, reading short texts and developing your own responses. Pronunciation, word order and grammar are introduced through the situations in which you use them.

The programme is suitable for learners considering further study, work or life in a German-speaking environment. A university or immigration authority may require a different level or a specific examination; check that requirement separately.

Who this programme is for
New learners and continuing students who want a structured foundation for study, work and daily life in German.

A1, A2 and B1 describe CEFR learning levels. Europa course completion is separate from a Goethe-Zertifikat or other external examination and does not guarantee an exam result.

What you will learn

Review the starting point, language skills and intended outcomes at each stage.

A1German foundations

Begin with the sounds and patterns of German, then use simple sentences to exchange information about yourself and your immediate surroundings.

Starting knowledge

No previous German is required. You do not need an examination certificate to begin.

Learning objectives

  • Introduce yourself and ask for personal information.
  • Manage straightforward requests about time, prices and places.
  • Recognise familiar words in short messages and recordings.

Speaking

Practise introductions, ordering, spelling names and asking someone to repeat or slow down.

Listening

Identify names, numbers, times and simple instructions in clear, carefully paced speech.

Reading

Read signs, brief notices, timetables and short personal messages with familiar vocabulary.

Writing

Complete basic personal details and write short greetings, introductions and simple requests.

Grammar & language focus

  • German sounds, alphabet and spelling
  • Present-tense verbs and question word order
  • Noun gender, articles and common plurals
  • Negation, personal pronouns and basic accusative patterns
  • Family, food, time, places and appointments

Indicative structure

The indicative sequence moves from sound and sentence foundations to short everyday exchanges, then combines the skills in practical tasks. Teaching hours and timetable will be announced.

Resources & materials

  • Pronunciation and spelling practice
  • Short dialogues with listening tasks
  • Topic vocabulary and sentence-building exercises

Completion expectations

Work towards short, supported exchanges and basic written messages. The final assessment approach and any completion documentation will be confirmed with the intake details.

A2Everyday German

Extend your A1 foundation to talk about routines, make arrangements and describe events with greater detail.

Starting knowledge

An A1 foundation: you can introduce yourself, use basic present-tense sentences and understand short, familiar exchanges.

Learning objectives

  • Handle routine travel, shopping and service situations.
  • Describe a recent experience and discuss everyday plans.
  • Find specific information in short practical texts.

Speaking

Make appointments, ask for directions and describe your daily life or a recent activity.

Listening

Follow the main information in clear announcements, everyday conversations and short messages.

Reading

Locate relevant details in advertisements, simple emails, menus and public information.

Writing

Write short personal emails, invitations and explanations about familiar needs.

Grammar & language focus

  • Perfect tense and common past forms
  • Accusative and dative in useful contexts
  • Separable verbs, modal verbs and reflexive expressions
  • Comparisons and sentence links such as weil and dass
  • Travel, housing, health and daily work

Indicative structure

The outline revisits A1 patterns before adding past events, practical transactions and connected messages. Guided speaking and text work run together; the final schedule is to be announced.

Resources & materials

  • Practical reading and listening activities
  • Verb and case reference exercises
  • Email models and conversation prompts

Completion expectations

Aim to take part in routine exchanges with less support and produce short connected messages. Assessment arrangements will be published before registration opens.

B1Independent German

Use connected German to describe experiences, explain decisions and take part in conversations on familiar topics.

Starting knowledge

An A2 foundation, including routine exchanges, common past-tense forms and short personal correspondence.

Learning objectives

  • Explain an opinion and give understandable reasons.
  • Follow the main points of clear speech about familiar subjects.
  • Organise connected writing about experiences and plans.

Speaking

Discuss study, work and everyday issues; describe a problem and respond to another person's view.

Listening

Identify the main points and relevant details in clear conversations, interviews and short talks.

Reading

Read straightforward articles, instructions and correspondence, using context to infer some unfamiliar words.

Writing

Write connected accounts, practical emails and short texts that explain a preference or decision.

Grammar & language focus

  • Narration across familiar past forms
  • Subordinate clauses and relative clauses
  • Common passive structures
  • Polite requests and hypothetical situations with Konjunktiv II
  • Reasons, consequences and organising an argument

Indicative structure

The proposed sequence develops narration and explanation, then applies them to discussion, reading and written tasks. Duration, study load and assessment will be confirmed for the intake.

Resources & materials

  • Longer listening passages and structured discussion prompts
  • Reading strategies and vocabulary in context
  • Writing plans, model correspondence and revision tasks

Completion expectations

Work towards independent communication on familiar subjects, while recognising gaps that need further practice. B1 study alone does not establish eligibility for a particular university, visa or qualification.
